MEETING MINUTES

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 2009

The Human Relations Advisory Board of the City of Mesa met in a Regular Human Relations Advisory Board Meeting in the Lower Level, City Council Chambers, 57 E. First Street, March 25, 2009, 6:00 p.m.

1. Welcome and Introductions.

Chairperson Terry Benelli welcomed board members and introduced audience members:

      Mr. Tom Richards from the Mesa Leadership Training and Development (Mesa LTD)

      Ms. Cindy Clafin-Debrocke from the Mesa LTD

      Ms. Denise Heap, from the East Valley Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer’s (LGBTQ’s) for Change organization

2. Approval of minutes from the February 25, 2009 board meeting.

    A motion was made by board member, Rory Gilbert to approve the minutes. Board member, Everette Woods seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

3. Items from Citizens Present.

    No items from citizens present.

4. Discussion Items/Action Items:

      a. Discuss and take action on the presentation by Annica Benning. Author and photographer, Miss Annica Benning is fourteen years old and a freshman at Scottsdale Preparatory Academy. Her book entitled Arizona: Nations and Art showcases Native American culture.

        Discuss and take action on Miss Benning’s presentation on the Multicultural Youth Summit for Understanding.

        Miss Benning asked the board to help her reach her goal of giving her book to elementary schools across the valley. She also informed the board of her speaking engagement at the Multicultural Youth Summit of Understanding on April 25, 2009

        Individual board members offered support to Miss Benning.

      b. Discuss and take action on the presentation by Executive Director of The Foundation for Intercultural Dialogue (FID), Mr. Mustafa Gunozu. The FID will be holding the Second Annual Arizona Children’s Festival at the Mesa Arts Center on April 25, 2009.

        Mr. Gunozu explained the purpose of The Foundation for Intercultural Dialogue and what they have done to bring different cultures together. Mr. Gunozo gave a brief description of the activities planned for the Arizona Children’s Festival and asked the board to for their support in publicizing this event to the residents of Mesa.

        Board member John Matthews made a motion that the Human Relations Advisory Board compose and send a press release in support of the Arizona Children’s Festival. Board member Mark Tompert seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

The rest of the agenda was tabled for the next meeting.

Adjournment.

Board Chair Terri Benelli adjourned the meeting at approximately 6:43 p.m.

    The next regular meeting is on April 22, 2009, at 6:00 p.m.
